The Obama Factor

January 16th, 2008 | by Mara

If you follow the news at all you will see the Barrack Obama and Hillary Clinton are basically in a dead heat for the Democratic nomination for President.  Inspite of Hillary Clinton’s better efforts, he keeps gaining in popularity.  But, who is Barrack Obama really popular with?  He’s popular with young people.  He’s popular with generations X and Y, and I saw the reason in the comments to a news article about Obama.  Obama is popular with generations X and Y in large part because he is not a Baby Boomer.  The commenter put into words the feelings that are in the hearts of so many:  The Baby Boomer generation - of which Hillary Clinton is a member - consumed everything and left us with crumbs.   Generation X more so than Generation Y are known for being disaffected.  We make less than the generation before us, and we know we will likely never see a dime in social security.  Barrack Obama gives us a feeling of something that these generations desperately need:  Hope.  For all her talk about change, to us Hillary Clinton represents the problem.
